The Sweetest Voter Registration Drive in CD8

Eight volunteers, one box of donut holes, and twenty-eight new registrations at Thornton Fest

The Secret Ingredient

What does it take to get people talking about voter registration at a busy community festival? Apparently, a box of donut holes from Dunkin’ goes a long way.

On June 6, our team of eight dedicated volunteers spent the full day at Thornton Fest registering voters in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District. This time, we tried something different. Instead of opening with “Are you registered to vote?” we led with “Would you like a donut hole?” — and the Donuts for Democracy approach delivered.

The Results

  • 45 community members stopped by to chat or ask questions about voting
  • 28 people visited our table
to register, check their status, update party affiliation, or change their address
  • Two first-time voters registered
  • Two young women who had just turned 18 signed up to vote for the very first time — the highlight of
    the day

A VIP Drop-in

We even had a special visitor: Tiny, the official Thornton mascot, stopped by to say hello
and show some civic spirit.

Why It Works

The Donuts for Democracy method works because it lowers the barrier to conversation.  Once someone stops for a snack, they’re already at your table — and talking about registration feels natural from there. We’ll definitely be using this approach again.

Keep checking our website for upcoming voter registration opportunities — more events are on the way, and every registration counts.
